It is amazing just how quickly the Gungate Precinct is being demolished. I went over to take a look at progress and to see just how much of the old buildings had already been demolished.

So much has already come down; the old Co-op building has virtually gone, the grabbers are making huge inroads into Poundland and a lot of the other buildings are well on their way to being dust and rubble.

I also invited the Herald’s John Harper to come with me to take a look. I am sure John won’t mind me referring to him as one of the biggest critics of some of the buildings which were built in Tamworth during the 1960s. It was clear John is excited about the demolition and the future of the site!

John even got to sit behind the controls of some of the machinery knocking down Gungate as we took some photos.

Take a look at what John had to say about the project. Apologies for the sound in places – it was very windy and we were in the middle of a busy building site.

However, that Kwik Save store eventually closed, and was occupied by Pound Plus until the precinct’s demolition last year. [...]
